Bounce rate

Definition

The bounce rate is a metric that indicates the percentage of sessions during which the user did not perform any meaningful interaction with the site. It is a key indicator of engagement and content relevance relative to visitor expectations.

Evolution from Universal Analytics to GA4

In Universal Analytics, a bounce was a session with a single page view, regardless of how long the visitor spent on the page. A user could read an article for 10 minutes and still count as a bounce.

In GA4, the definition has been inverted: the bounce rate is now the inverse of the engagement rate. A session is considered engaged if it lasts more than 10 seconds, includes at least one conversion event, or contains at least 2 page views. The 10-second threshold is customizable in the property settings.

Interpretation and limitations

A high bounce rate is not always negative. For a blog post or contact page, a bounce may mean the user found the information they were looking for. However, a high bounce rate on an e-commerce product page generally signals a relevance or user experience issue. Analysis should always be contextualized by page type and traffic source.
