Server-Side Tracking — Take Back Control of Your Data

Server-side GTM implementation. Bypass ad blockers, extend cookie lifetime, improve data accuracy. Stape, Addingwell, or self-hosted.

Why go server-side

Client-side tracking is reaching its limits. Ad blockers affect 30 to 40% of desktop users in Europe, and browsers keep tightening restrictions on third-party cookies (ITP on Safari, ETP on Firefox). The result: underestimated conversion data, incomplete remarketing audiences, and attribution models skewed by gaps in data collection.

Server-side tracking moves tag execution from the user’s browser to a server you control. Requests go through your own domain as first-party, making them invisible to ad blockers. Cookies are set as first-party with controlled lifespans. You regain visibility on conversions that were previously lost, while reducing the weight of client-side scripts, which improves Core Web Vitals.

Technical architecture: GTM Server-Side

Google Tag Manager offers a server-side container that acts as an intelligent proxy between the browser and collection platforms. The GTM client receives hits via an endpoint on your subdomain (e.g. collect.yourdomain.com), transforms them if needed, then distributes them to GA4, Google Ads, Meta CAPI, and any other configured endpoint.

Hosting runs on Google Cloud Run, or through managed solutions like Stape.io or Addingwell that simplify deployment and maintenance. Stape offers European hosting with a built-in CDN, which eases GDPR compliance. Addingwell, a French solution, provides dedicated support and a real-time hit monitoring interface.

Benefits, limitations and trade-offs

Server-side delivers measurable gains: collection rates up by 15 to 30% depending on the site, better conversion data quality, fewer client-side scripts, and full control over outgoing data (you can filter PII before sending to third parties). It is also a compliance lever: the server acts as a control point where you decide which data goes where.

Limitations exist. Hosting costs add to your budget (expect 30 to 150 euros per month depending on traffic). Setup is more complex than a standard client-side implementation: DNS configuration, SSL certificate, end-to-end testing. Some tags are not yet available server-side. The decision is made case by case based on your traffic, data stakes and technical maturity.
