Google Tag Gateway
Definition
Google Tag Gateway is a fully Google-managed server-side tracking solution, launched in 2024. It offers an alternative to manually deploying a GTM Server-Side container on Google Cloud. The goal is to simplify server-side tracking adoption by eliminating infrastructure management.
Difference from GTM Server-Side
With classic GTM Server-Side, you deploy and manage your own container on Cloud Run or App Engine. You control the infrastructure, costs and network configuration. With Google Tag Gateway, Google manages the infrastructure for you: no Google Cloud project to configure, no server to maintain. The trade-off is more limited customization options.
Advantages
The main advantage is ease of setup. Google Tag Gateway is activated directly in the Google tag admin interface, with no cloud expertise required. It offers the same core benefits as classic server-side: bypassing ad blockers, extending first-party cookie lifespan and improving client-side performance.
Limitations and considerations
Google Tag Gateway is a recent solution with a still-evolving feature set. It does not yet allow the same level of customization as a full server-side container: advanced data filtering, hit enrichment and integration with non-Google tools are more limited. For businesses with advanced GDPR compliance or data control needs, a dedicated GTM Server-Side setup often remains preferable.
