Universal Analytics
Definition
Universal Analytics (UA) is the third generation of Google Analytics, launched in 2012. For over a decade, it was the global standard for web audience measurement. Its model relied on sessions, page views and interactions (events using category/action/label).
End of life
Google permanently shut down Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023, forcing all users to migrate to GA4. Historical UA data has been inaccessible since July 2024. Organizations that did not plan the migration in advance lost access to their historical data.
Differences with GA4
The shift from UA to GA4 represents a paradigm change. UA used a linear model (session > page view > event) while GA4 treats everything as an event. The bounce rate was redefined, views no longer exist, and the attribution model shifted to data-driven by default.
Impact for businesses
The UA-to-GA4 migration required entirely rethinking measurement plans, dashboards and goals. Many businesses need a tracking audit to verify that their GA4 configuration correctly captures the data that was previously tracked in Universal Analytics.
